It sounds like you used fabric softener. Make sure to brush in the natural intended direction of the fur and use tape to get out any debris from matted areas. Add vinegar to the max line to the wash like you would fabric softener. Then use the piece for a template to cut the new fur into the needed shape.

As you continue you will start to see how much fur get collected in the brush. Do not bring your faux fur to the dry cleaner as dry cleaning chemicals may reduce the material s softness potentially leading to matting and tufting. Some unjointed polyester stuffed animals can be washed in a washing machine the tag should indicate that you can wash and use a bit of fabric softener in the rinse if the animal is washable. Then simply sew the new fur in place with a proper colored thread.

Machine wash your faux fur sparingly just a few times per year as a rule of thumb. Dry on low in the dryer. The synthetic material will become brittle and even more matted the fur fibers may even melt. Some stuffed animals are made from synthetic fibers so special care needs to be taken to brush them.
